Review: How Keepgo Pisces eSIM works in Bulgaria

During my visit to Sofia, Bulgaria, I used an eSIM from Keepgo. I review the Keepgo Pisces eSIM and my experience in this article. Bulgaria is one of the countries that belong to the European Union. If you have a contract with one of the EU’s operators, you can easily use your allowance in Bulgaria.

Keepgo products for Bulgaria

I found it strange that I had to log in before viewing the products. Keepgo offers six products for Bulgaria. Corvus is the eSIM for Europe. Orion is for Europe and the US.

I bought Pisces last year. In comparison, Corvus offers different mobile operators in various countries. I prefer having multiple choices. If one network has a problem, I can switch to another. If I decided to use Corvus in Slovakia, I would use the T-Mobile network. Conversely, the Pisces would sign up to the O2 or Orange network.

Detailed instructions on creating an account and buying a data package can be found in this article.

Price

Product prices vary by data size. Corvus offers data from 100 MB for 3 US dollars to 100 GB for 180 US dollars. Phoenix offers data from 300MB for 3 US dollars to 50GB for 510 US dollars for comparison.

Validity is one year. In case of additional data purchases, the validity is extended by another year.

What phones support eSIM?

With this technology’s growing popularity, more and more phones and tablets are on the market that support it. When buying a phone, you should check with the seller whether the phone supports eSIM.

You can find the list by clicking “Is your device eSIM-enabled?”.

Mobile operators in Bulgaria and connection type

Several operators exist in Bulgaria – A1, Yettel (former Telenor), and Vivacom. Keepgo Pisces can use the network connection of all three operators. An example of signal coverage from operator Yettel is shown in the picture below.

Connection type

Keepgo lists 4G/LTE on its website. More and more operators are launching 5G networks, so you may see a 5G icon on your phone.

eSIM Activation

The activation and validity period of the data package starts as soon as the eSIM is connected to one of the supported networks for the first time.

My data plan

I bought Keepgo Pisces last year. When I travel around Europe, I like to try this product in different countries.

Network registration

Before departure at Heathrow Airport, I checked whether my Keepgo Pisces eSIM could register into one of the English networks. It struggled the whole 15 minutes. Since we were about to depart, I put the phone in aeroplane mode.

After landing at the airport in Sofia, I turned off aeroplane mode and watched what would happen. My British SIM card was registered to the network right away. Whereas Keepgo eSIM struggled again. After 5 minutes, it finally registered to the Yettel network, but without data. Even a manual APN reset in the phone settings didn’t help.

The data finally started working after another 10 minutes.

Coverage

During my stay in Bulgaria, I only visited Sofia. I had no problem with the signal in Sofia. Internet was available whenever I needed it. Surprisingly, I also saw the 5G icon when I was in the city centre, and the eSIM was using the A1 network.

Speed

Since 5G was available, I decided to test the speed. To my disappointment, the download speed was only 33 Mbps, and the upload speed was 2.9 Mbps. The 5G label was probably just for marketing, as is the whole 5G Roaming.

Top-ups

Buying additional data was easy. The menu of all available products is displayed after clicking on “Refill”. Just choose the data size. After paying, there was no need to install the eSIM again. The data was automatically added to the existing eSIM. Quite simple, isn’t it?

Conclusion

The advantage of Keepgo products is their extended validity. It is suitable for travellers who regularly return to a specific area, e.g. Europe, Asia, the Middle East, or America.

The disadvantage is that it is impossible to find out what APN will be used in advance. In my case, manually setting the APN would speed up the data issue.
